Currently employed as Technical Demonstrator (Music) in The School of Performing Arts and Music, Bath Spa University College, my main interest is in Computer Music particularly the use of Csound. Csound is one of a group synthesis languages derived from Max Mathews Music 3 program. All derivatives of Music 3 use the idea of an orchestra definition and a score definition, these are then compiled and the program run. The code is available to enable users to use a wide variety of machines, and on the whole it is well documented, although the learning curve is quite steep. There are many sites on the net where Csound code may be downloaded, the best in my opinion is csounds.com .
PERSONAL DETAILS....
I came to Bath in 1978, having moved from Cheltenham where I DJ'ed in various clubs and locations in the area. Soon I started DJ'ing again, this time at the legendary Moles Club where I became full-time resident jock. In 1983 I joined what is now Bath Spa University College as music technician. I formed Beatsystem in 1985 to play systems music in rock venues and clubs. It consisted of various members of staff and students from my place of work and proved an interesting and rewarding experience. It was however abandoned in 1987 when too many students left after finishing their courses and I decided to become studio based. After two minor hits with dance tracks I returned to my main interest, electronic and computer music. The decision to used Csound was made so as to get away from the usual sequencing/synthesiser based electronic music found in rock, pop and dance music and to use the sort of software used in so called serious music. This idea to use research based software and techniques was appealing to EM:T records who gave me a chance to record my own CD's for them. The CD “ EM:T 2297 “ was released in 1997 to critical acclaim (see reviews) Since 1998 the original Emit have ceased trading, they have however re-launched in November 2003 under new management with a new compilation emit 0003.mailto:pierce_derek@hotmail.com
